Maybe strat was trying to take some of the heat off of Rich?

;)

I am reminded of a seminar alomst 30 yrs ago about just this topic: the prof walked in and said "name the top ten guitarists, all time" [guess what? more or less the same list as I would make NOW was made then, in the 80s...~ 200 people in the rm]

But the pt is, he was making the "lack of opportunity" connection; he qualified it with the "possible biological differences due to sexual selection", but we'll have to see how it evolves over the upcoming decades; it might be that there are some influences that won't make up the difference.

Now, don't get me wrong, but imagine if good sexual selection is driving males to do all sorts of compulsive things in part for impressing lady friends, and being absurdly compulsive about practicing a guitar or bball (ahem, BD?), might be (trust I am only saying MIGHT) in play here, and so maybe some strange acts of esoteric achievement won't necessarily be developed as dramatically by the more sensible gals than guys...big fat I DUNNO, but we'll have to wait and see...?

I think it's more than obvious that the bar has historically been a lot higher for a woman to gain recognition as a rock guitarist. It's true of pretty much everything else, so why not here too? Even joining a rock band was probably pretty tough for a girl in the 50s or even 60s and beyond. How many parents 50 years ago wanted their little girls shaking it on stage and singing about sex and all that? Not many. How many even today?

Anyway, I stand by my original comment. Telling women they shouldn't bother is just an ignorant, chauvinistic thing to say. I suspect that he was just being provocative, but it's still bullshit, so I'm happy to call him on it.

Oh I hear ya; also, as to culture, think about how the "bad boy image" was part of guys pursuing the guitar (at least in my day, 60s and 70s) and no gals wanted much of a part of that...it was all about "impressing gals" and the like (or at least for many).

So, my pt is really that (as you note) culture is HUGE in this domain...I only mention that sometimes biology can influence us in ways that culture expands on, counters or ignores, and it's not always as blk and white as we might think...ie, it may not ONLY be that they have been held back, if that makes sense.

Might be, but other factors could influence as well...this in no way detracts from strat rating a major sexist pig bitch slap, which I am confident he'd accept from...I dunno, Rose?
